Leadership in Pipeline Integrity Systems according to European Standards
Procainsa SA stands out for being a pioneer in the implementation of pipe integrity systems, following the European standards UNE EN 16348:2014 and prEN (TS_15399:2016).
The PIMS (Pipeline Integrity Management System), as we call it, encompasses a series of essential activities and practices by which the Pipeline Operator preserves the integrity of the pipeline. The primary purpose of PIMS is to ensure safe and reliable transportation and distribution.
The objective of PIMS is to demonstrate in an auditable manner how the various pipeline management systems, controls and functions effectively contribute to ensuring integrity throughout the infrastructure lifecycle.
Key areas of PIMS include:
- Inspection, maintenance and repair of the pipeline
- Pipeline monitoring strategies
- Corrosion management
- Risk studies and risk matrices
- Mechanical integrity of the pipeline
- Anomaly management and control
- Performance management (KPIs)
Procainsa SA is committed to offering integral and safe solutions, complying with the highest standards of quality and safety in the transport and distribution of fluids along pipelines.
Experience in Pipeline Integrity Assessment
The condition of a pipeline can be affected by various defects throughout its lifetime. The main objective of the integrity assessment is to determine whether the pipeline can operate safely within its current parameters and to establish criteria for maintaining its integrity in an efficient manner.
Procainsa has extensive experience in the assessment of defects in pipelines from various inspections, such as the use of smart pistons, coating failure detection, cathodic protection, inspection with remotely operated vehicles (ROV), non-destructive testing, among others.
In addition, we have the ability to combine the data from all these inspections to predict corrosion rates and calculate the remaining life of the pipeline. This allows us to optimise inspection, maintenance and repair operations.
Our services include:
- Integrity Assessment (Fitness for Purpose Studies)
- Data analysis of Intelligent Line Inspection (ILI) tools
- Estimation of the remaining lifetime of the pipeline
- Development of maintenance, inspection and repair strategies
- Calculation of the cost of the integrity of the pipeline over its entire life cycle
At Procainsa, we are committed to providing comprehensive and accurate solutions to ensure the safety and efficiency of pipeline operations, from integrity assessment to the implementation of appropriate maintenance strategies.
Pipeline Life Extension in the Oil&Gas Sector
With ageing infrastructure, many pipelines are approaching or exceeding their original design life. Operators seek to keep these facilities operational, ensuring safe transportation or distribution of products.
In the mature Oil&Gas sector, it is common for pipelines to have been in service for more than 25 years, exceeding the typical specified design life. At Procainsa, we carry out pipeline life extension studies based on ISO/TS 12747:2011.
Our services include:
- Fitness of Purpose Studies
- Data analysis of Intelligent Line Inspection (ILI) tools
- Management, evaluation and categorisation of anomalies
- Evaluation of the internal and external corrosion features
- Pipeline fatigue assessment
- Risk assessment and risk management
- Study of the remaining life of the pipeline
- Integrity management update
At Procainsa, we are committed to providing comprehensive and specialised solutions to extend the useful life of pipelines in the Oil&Gas sector, guaranteeing the safety and efficiency of operations over time.
Pipeline Defect Assessment through Smart Piston Inspection
Procainsa has extensive experience in assessing defects in pipelines detected by smart piston inspections.
We offer services to assess the integrity of your pipeline based on detailed analysis of the data collected during the smart piston inspection.
Defects we can identify include:
- Corrosion defects
- Dents
- Welding defects
- Manufacturing and construction defects
At Procainsa, we are committed to providing comprehensive and accurate analysis of smart piston inspection data, enabling a complete assessment of the integrity of your pipeline.
Frequently asked questions about integrity management
What is mechanical integrity and what is its importance in the industry?
Mechanical integrity is the set of processes and practices that ensure industrial equipment and pipelines operate safely throughout their life cycle. Its main objective is to prevent catastrophic failures and leaks, ensuring that assets have been designed, installed, and maintained under the strictest safety and quality standards.
What does a Pipeline Integrity Management System (PIMS) consist of?
PIMS (Pipeline Integrity Management System) is a structured framework that allows pipeline operators to proactively manage risks. At Procainsa, we implement systems based on European regulations such as UNE EN 16348, integrating inspection, maintenance, and performance evaluation to ensure reliable and auditable fluid transport.
What services does a complete mechanical integrity study include?
A comprehensive mechanical integrity study must address different critical areas of the asset:
Defect assessment: Identification of corrosion, dents, or welding failures through intelligent inspection (ILI).
Fitness for Purpose Studies: Analysis to determine if the equipment is suitable to continue operating under its current parameters.
Remaining useful life calculation: Estimation of the time the asset can remain in service before requiring a major intervention.
How is integrity inspection carried out in transport pipelines?
Inspection is carried out using advanced technologies that detect anomalies without necessarily interrupting operation. Notable techniques include the use of smart pigs for internal analysis and methods like DCVG (Direct Current Voltage Gradient) to assess the condition of the external coating and cathodic protection.
When is it necessary to perform a life extension assessment?
It is recommended when infrastructures, especially in the Oil&Gas sector, approach or exceed 25 years (their original design life). Following ISO/TS 12747 regulations, we perform fatigue analysis and risk management to certify that the pipeline can continue to operate safely beyond its initial term.
